This famous masterpiece has recently been re-imagined by Ian Rae, working entirely from Mussorgsky’s piano original, filling it out where necessary but ignoring all other orchestrations. He has deliberately confined himself to the forces that Beethoven might have used, as Hartmann (the author of the pictures in question) was an architect, not a career artist, and although his images were imaginative enough to inspire his friend, they were on a modest scale; yet this score demonstrates the dramatic power of the classical orchestra.
While listening to a recording by Sviatoslav Richter, Ian spotted three long-standing errors in the familiar published edition and corrected them from the composer’s manuscript (which despite his notorious lifestyle is crystal clear).
2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones (ATB - only to be used if an alto is available) timpani, strings.
